Josephus Daniels, son of Josephus and Mary (Cleves) Daniels, was born in Washington, North Carolina, May 18, 1862. He attended the Wilson Collegiate Institute. On May 2, 1888, he married Addie W. Sereno Stansbury Pratt (1858-1915) was born in Westmoreland, New York. He entered the newspaper business after graduating from the University of Vermont. During his career, Pratt worked for the Commercial Bulletin, the Journal of Commerce, the New York World, and the Baltimore Sun. He later became the Financial Editor for the New York Times and Editor in Chief for the Wall Street Journal.
